Back from the Farnes
I'm not the worlds greatest birder but you really cannot beat the thrill of the sea bird colony. Suicidal kittiwakes, rows and rows of dumb founded looking guillemots, clownish puffins and artic terns with tempers as hot as there bright red beaks. It was the serene eiders that will really stay with me though. Calmly gliding through the madness. Saint Cuthbert set up laws as far back as the 5th century to protect these beautiful ducks and i have to say they act in a way that suggests they know they are watched over by a saint. I met a man in Seahouses who liked to get down to the beach a couple of days a week in the summer just to watch the eiders. i don't envy people their money or possessions but i do envy the man who has time aside to just watch eiders every week.He must leave feeling as chilled as a.......Well as an eider.
