Skomer (Pembrokeshire): a birdwatching guide E-mail

Skomer and its near neighbour Skokholm are among the finest islands in Europe for breeding seabirds and host the major Puffin colonies in south-west Britain.

Marazion Marsh (Cornwall): a birdwatching guide E-mail

Marazion Marsh is most famous for its association with Aquatic Warbler. Although far from guaranteed, especially in recent years, a mid- to late August visit will probably offer UK birders the best chance for seeing this species, with more than 170 having been logged at the site. Spotted Crake is another speciality.

Leighton Moss (Lancashire): a birdwatching guide E-mail

Glorious restful scenery and many wetland, reedbed, woodland and coastal birds.

Itinerary by John Wilson

Cley Marshes (Norfolk): a birdwatching guide E-mail

The Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s legendary Cley Marshes Nature Reserve has a history of superb year-round birding in a relatively small area, with several special breeding species, an impressive list of passage migrants and, in winter, masses of wildfowl. However, Cley is undoubtedly at its best in the autumn.

From July to September there can be large numbers of returning Arctic waders, among which rarities are found every year. Add the chance of good seawatching from the nearby beach, passerine migrants passing through and the appearance of the unexpected on a regular basis, and you have something for every birder.

Itinerary by Tony Marr

Bridges of Ross (Co Clare): a birdwatching guide E-mail

One of the best hot-spots in western Europe to observe seabird passage from land.

Itinerary by John Murphy

The Lizard (Cornwall): a birdwatching guide E-mail

Wader migration is well underway and various passerines are on the move. August is the best month for the greatest variety of seabird passage off Cornwall, sometimes involving large numbers of Cory’s Shearwaters. There is a chance of a rarity turning up from Europe on south-easterly winds and by the end of the month the first Atlantic gale may have deposited an American wader.

Itinerary by Paul Semmens

Shannon Airport Lagoon (Co Clare): a birdwatching guide E-mail

Shannon Airport Lagoon offers exciting wader watching for beginners as well as the more experienced birder. This jewel on the west coast of Ireland has become a magnet for transatlantic waders.

Itinerary by John Murphy

North Ronaldsay (Orkney): a birdwatching guide E-mail

This unique island offers spectacular maritime scenery, affording close views of breeding birds and migrants.

Itinerary by Peter Donnelly

Blakeney Point (Norfolk): a birdwatching guide E-mail

Blakeney Point combines a superbly strategic location with a great diversity of habitats. It offers a fine selection of breeding birds (notably terns) and migrants, the latter occasionally in numbers, with the chance of scarce and rare birds.
