A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA), the common contains dry and wet heath, scrub and woodland with many special birds associated with these habitats.

Windswept and remote, the Falkland Islands are a haven for seabirds, holding two-thirds of the world population of Black-browed Albatross and millions of penguins. Steve Young was lucky enough to visit this bird-rich archipelago.

In summer, this is the best place in Britain to get close views of Red-necked Phalarope. Other breeding waders put on a good show too, as do skuas and a range of other seabirds.
