Stornoway, the main settlement on Lewis, boasts a wider
range of habitats than any other part of the island. Increasing numbers of
birders visit in late winter and early spring, but it remains underwatched in autumn.

Overview
The Laxdale River estuary and surrounds provide good habitat
for ducks, waders and other birds, with divers, grebes and seaduck along the
open coast. Winter is the main period for scarce and rare gulls, but there are
plenty of gulls around in autumn too. Extensive cover attracts passerines.
Birds
Whooper Swan, migrant geese (especially Pink-feet),
Green-winged Teal, Common Eider, Long-tailed Duck, Common Scoter, Red-throated,
Black-throated and Great Northern Divers, Slavonian Grebe, Merlin, Peregrine
Falcon, European Golden Plover, Little Stint, Pectoral, Curlew and
Buff-breasted Sandpipers, Ruff, Black-tailed Godwit, chance of an early
white-winged gull, Black Guillemot, possibly Waxwing, Blackcap, chance of
Yellow-browed Warbler, Common Chiffchaff, possibly Pied Flycatcher, Blue Tit,
Treecreeper, Rook, chance of Rose-coloured Starling, Twite, redpolls.
