Frensham Common (Surrey) E-mail

All of England’s lowland heath specialities are present in this prime patch of habitat, alongside woodland birds such as Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Common Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher. The two ponds and a reedbed provide added interest.

Overview

A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA), the common contains dry and wet heath, scrub and woodland, as well as Frensham Little and Great Ponds on either side of the A287. The 920-acre site also supports important populations of reptiles, insects and bats.

Great Crested Grebe, Common Buzzard, Hobby, possible Water Rail, Woodcock, Common Tern, Tawny Owl, European Nightjar, Green, Great Spotted and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Woodlark, Tree Pipit, Common Redstart, European Stonechat, Common Whitethroat, Garden, Reed, Dartford and Wood Warblers, Spotted Flycatcher, Marsh Tit, Siskin, Linnet, Lesser Redpoll, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting.

There is a snack bar at Great Pond, behind the ranger’s hut. The Bridge Hotel offers light lunches.
